Training Classes

Thank you for your interest in the training classes offered by the North York Obedience Club. The trainers at the North York Obedience Club have many years of experience training dogs in preparation for formal competition. Their training and competition experience ranges from Conformation to Obedience, from Rally-O to Agility. Some of our trainers have earned many championship titles in various competitions approved by the Canadian Kennel Club, the American Kennel Club, and the United Kennel Club. The trainers at the North York Obedience Club volunteer their time, experience and expertise to the public and as such, our students get the best possible guidance to ensure that their loyal companions are well mannered and obedient in every situation.

Our classes are very popular and fill quickly. They are strictly limited in size so please return your completed registration form and payment as soon as possible in order to guarantee your placement. Classes are filled on a "first come, first served" basis.

Class Description

Beginners – Family Pet Training

The goal is to have a well-balanced and obedient puppy/dog that will be welcome in most situations.

Basic obedience is taught. Minor distractions are used to ensure success.

The key behaviours taught in this class are

  1. Pay attention on cue;
  2. Relax/Settle;
  3. Introduction to go to mat/bed/place;
  4. Polite walking;
  5. Leave it and take it;
  6. Introduction to basic recall;
  7. Sit when asked;
  8. Down when asked; and
  9. Gently accepting praise, rewards, and treats from handler and family.


Advanced Beginners – 'Canine Good Neighbour' Training

The Advanced Beginners class builds on the skills learned in the Beginners class. The goal is to have a very obedient dog in most to all situations including preparation for the Canadian Kennel Club’s Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) test.

Mid-level obedience is taught. Medium level distractions are used. Distractions will include other dogs, people, food, noise, etc.

The key behaviours taught in this class are

  1. Pay attention on cue regardless of environment;
  2. Go to mat/bed/place;
  3. Remain in place with stranger;
  4. Controlled walking through crowds, doors, other animals, and distractions;
  5. Leave it, take it, and give on command;
  6. Recall with distractions;
  7. Sit when asked, with 30 second stay and distractions;
  8. Down when asked, with 1 minute stay and distractions; and
  9. Gently accepting praise, rewards, and treats from friendly strangers.

Pre - Novice – 'Pre Companion Dog' Training

The Pre Companion Dog (PCD) title, as administered by the Canadian Kennel Club, is a transition title for handler/dog teams. It is a preparation step for those who would like to commence formal trials but feel that they may not be fully prepared for the Companion Dog (CD) trials. It is often used as a training assessment tool to evaluate a team’s attention to detail and timing.

Formal obedience is taught. Formal hand signals are introduced. Distractions will be used; including other dogs, people, food, noise, etc.

The key behaviours taught in this class are

  1. Proper heeling with a loose leash;
  2. Tight turns left and right while maintaining a proper heel position;
  3. Sitting while examined by other people;
  4. Off leash recalls from at least 20 feet;
  5. Sit with stay for at least 1 minute; and
  6. Down with stay for at least 2 minutes.

Novice – 'Companion Dog' Training

The Companion Dog (CD) title, as administered by the Canadian Kennel Club, is the first major obedience title for handler/dog teams. It is the first title required for those working towards the coveted Obedience Trial Champion (OTCh) title.

Formal obedience is taught. Formal hand signals are used. Major focus for this level is attention to minor details, timing, and the handler’s body language. Major distractions will be used; including other dogs, people, food, noise, etc.

The key behaviours taught in this class are

  1. Proper on and off leash heeling;
  2. Proper figure eight turns while maintaining a proper heel position;
  3. Standing while examined by other people;
  4. Off leash recalls from at least 40 feet with a formal finish;
  5. Sit with stay for at least 1 minute; and
  6. Down with stay for at least 3 minutes.

Open – 'Companion Dog Excellent' Training

The Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title, as administered by the Canadian Kennel Club, is the second major obedience title for handler/dog teams. It is the second title required for those working towards the coveted Obedience Trial Champion (OTCh) title.

Formal obedience is taught. Formal hand signals are used. Major focus for this level is attention to minor details, timing, and the handler’s body language.

The key behaviours taught in this class are

  1. Proper off leash heeling with figure eight turns;
  2. Recalls with down from at least 40 feet;
  3. Retrieve a dumbbell from about 20 feet over flat terrain;
  4. Retrieve a dumbbell from about 16 feet with high jump in the middle;
  5. Broad jump over a series of bars at least 8 feet away;
  6. Sit with explicit stay for at least 3 minute; and
  7. Down with explicit stay for at least 3 minutes.
